![]() Saxophonist, composer, and vocalist Camille Thurman opens Sunday’s performances on the Main Stage at 1 PM. Saturday finishes with the City of Iowa City’s fireworks at 9:30 PM. SuperBlue is a collaboration with guitar virtuoso Charlie Hunter, who returns to Iowa City for his third Jazz Festival appearance. The New York Times has called Elling “the standout jazz vocalist of our time.” He’s had fifteen GRAMMY nominations, winning twice, and has topped the DownBeat Critics and Readers polls for the past fourteen years. Wrapping up the evening on the Main Stage is SuperBlue, with Kurt Elling and Charlie Hunter, at 8 PM. Wilson, a Midwest native, says his guitar playing is inspired by multiple genres, from soul to gospel to hip hop. The student focus continues at 12:15 with the North Corridor All-Stars, a similar ensemble comprised of students from I-380’s northern region, from Cedar Rapids all the way to Cedar Falls, directed by Coe College’s Steve Shanley.Ī veteran at jazz festivals, world-renown performer Yogev Shetrit and his Trio takes the stage at 2 PM, and GRAMMY Award nominee and LetterOne Rising Stars Jazz Award Winner Dan Wilson follows at 4 PM.ĭrummer Yogev Shetrit was born in Israel with Moroccan roots, and he says those parts of his identity are influential in the development of his jazz sound. The UJE is a collective of students from Iowa City High, West High, and Liberty High directed by Aaron Ottmar and Rich Medd. Hancher joins Summer of the Arts to cap off the evening, with two-time GRAMMY winner Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience at 8 PM with a funky mix of blues, reggae, and zydeco music.Īll Friday performances are on the Ped Mall Stage.Ĭontinuing a Jazz Festival tradition of showcasing student performers on the mainstage, Saturday opens at 11:30am with the United Jazz Ensemble, which has opened the festival more than 20 years.
